Sanatana dharma, in Hinduism, term used to denote the “eternal” or
absolute set of duties or religiously ordained practices incumbent upon all
Hindus, regardless of class, caste, or sect. Different texts give
different lists of the duties, but in general sanatana
dharma consists of virtues such as honesty, refraining from
injuring living beings, purity, goodwill, mercy, patience, forbearance,
self-restraint, generosity, and asceticism.
Traditionally, Hinduism is known as Sanatana Dharma, meaning
eternal duty.
Many people do not really know what dharma means and why
Hinduism is called Sanatana Dharma.
Dharma initially means duty and Sanatana Dharma is known as
eternal duty of God. This duty of god is not only shared by hindu people but by
all creation, including deities and rest of
humanity.
The main objective of Sanatana
Dharma is to provide message to all humanity and make them aware not to leave
the path of Karma.
Besides, we have seen, the
word Hindu was originally used secular sense than religion. Sanatana means
eternal and dharma means duty or obligatory duty. The expression has twin
meanings.
The duty of each is eternal,
in the sense that creation after creation, beings have to perform their duties
to keep the world and world order going.
This cycle of performing one’s
duties to keep world running smoothly is also known as Karma Chakra. And form this even god cannot escape. Many times ,god
has set us example for humans who have lost their path and are not able to find
a correct path.
Most common example is
Shreemad Bhagwat Geeta, part of Mahabharat, where God Vishnu as Krishna sets the
example that we should never leave the Dharma or our duties.
